49 hotels added in last FY:Economic survey

KATHMANDU: A total of 49 new hotels and resorts were added during the first half of the current fiscal year, according to the Economic Survey 2014-15.

As of mid-January this fiscal year, just one star hotel was added that kept the number of star hotels in the country at 118 while tourist standard hotels and resorts increased by 48 during at the same time to 957.

According to the survey released on Sunday, number of beds in star hotels increased by 48 to 9,554 as of Mid-January 2015.  Tourist standard hotels saw their bed numbers increased by 1608 to 26,625.

Tourism sector’s total contribution of he to the gross domestic product (GDP) is 2.6 percent as of mid-January this year. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, hotels and restaurants contribute about 75-80 percent of the tourism sector’s revenue to GDP.

However, hotel sector has been facing stiff challenges after the April 25 earthquake due to the massive inflow of visiting tourists and cancellation of bookings at hotels. As per the Post Disaster Need Assessment, the number of tourists visiting Nepal went down by about 90 percent between May‐July 2015. It caused about Rs16 billion worth of damages to the properties of hotel, damaging them fully or partially.
